A Men’s Shed for Stanley

Meets every Thursday, 10am -12 noon, in Stanley Bowling Club  Why not come along and see what it is all about? You’ll be made most welcome.

A Men’s Shed is a larger version of garden shed. A place of leisure where men come to work in a safe, friendly, and inclusive environment. They share tools, skills, and resources and work on projects of their own choosing, at their own pace, on individual and/or community projects. There are many benefits from being involved in a Men’s Shed including: social, health, skills sharing, learning and development (whatever your age!).

Autumn 2016

A group of local men have come together to explore the possibility of setting up a Men’s Shed in Stanley. The first meeting of the group was held on 31st August 2016. It was well attended and the men decided to meet on a monthly basis to pursue their quest for a Men’s Shed.

The group has appointed a Chair, Secretary and Treasurer and is working on its  constitution. They are seeking a start-up grant to cover the costs of meetings and activities whilst they identify and secure suitable premises in the village.

Here’s a short report on the first meeting:

Nine men turned up very interested in becoming members of a Men’s Shed. The theme was what is a Men’s Shed and the uses and activities that happen in a Men’s Shed were explained and discussed. Also discussed was what premises there are in the village and if anyone has any ideas that could be investigated. Posters and flyers for forthcoming meetings will be put up in in the usual public places around the village, on Facebook and on the Development Trust’s website.

This is a really exciting project and the group would love to hear from anyone who is interested in getting involved or who knows of any suitable premises.

Some of the group have joined the Scottish Men’s Shed Association which is a great source of information and experience in setting up a Shed. Scottish Men’s Shed Association
